The Legacy

Stewardship, Continuing

In 1976, the Reuter family began The Red Fox’s modern chapter with a preservation-first approach—protecting its architecture, character, and role in Middleburg rather than reinventing it. Turner Reuter Jr. continued that philosophy through thoughtful renovations that modernized only where necessary. In 2008, third- generation steward Matilda Reuter Engle expanded the mission from preservation to cultural stewardship, elevating hospitality and dining while honoring the inn’s hunt country roots. Across three generations, the family’s guiding principle has remained the same: safeguard the spirit of The Red Fox Inn & Tavern while ensuring it endures for generations to come.

F. Turner Reuter, JR
Proprietor, Second Generation Steward

Raised in both Washington and the Virginia’s Piedmont Turner Reuter has spent a life time connecting art and the country way of life. Through the sporting culture of Middleburg he developed a deep respect of the land and its community traditions. An accomplished horseman and field sport enthusiast Turner trained and rode chasers as an amateur in his youth, was a keen fox hunter with the Piedmont Fox Hounds for decades, later serving as Master. His passion for wing shooting and gun dog breeding and training continues through the present. He is author of Animal & Sporting Artists in America the definitive reference work on the subject and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Sporting Library and Museum. His work reflects a lifelong commitment to scholarship, stewardship, cultural preservation and mostly importantly time afield. Stewardship for Turner is a dedication to the country way of life-the land and its animals, the people and or field sports- past, present and future.

Matilda Reuter Engle
Creative & Executive Director, Third Generation Steward

A native of Middleburg and a seventh-generation steward of the Virginia Piedmont, Matilda has been shaped by the land, traditions, and rhythms of hunt country life from the beginning. Raised amid horses, working landscapes, and family enterprise, her understanding of place is both lived and inherited. At the center of her hometown stands The Red Fox Inn & Tavern, a house deeply intertwined with Matilda’s own history. Having witnessed two generations of family leadership before her, she assumed stewardship as Executive Director in 2008—guided by a perspective formed equally by legacy and lived experience. Before returning home, Matilda built her foundation in hospitality beyond the Piedmont, including formative work at the Biltmore Estate. There, she gained insight into the daily stewardship of a historic, family-owned property—an experience that continues to inform her approach. Care, continuity, and respect for the people behind the work remain central to her philosophy. Today, Matilda oversees The Red Fox with an emphasis on thoughtful evolution. Supported by a long-standing and deeply experienced team, she remains committed to preserving the character of the house while ensuring it continues to feel lived-in, relevant, and gracious.
